Soumitro enjoys experience of a lifetime on trade mission to Scandinavia

Soumitro Saha - MBA Global

An MBA Global student at the University of South Wales (USW) has experienced a once-in-a-lifetime trip during an internship with Glamorgan Brewing Co – a Welsh Government trade mission to Denmark and Norway.

Soumitro Saha, who is originally from Bangladesh, is in the second year of the MBA Global and is on a placement with Glamorgan Brewing Co as a marketing adviser. He joined USW in 2022, with a decade of experience in digital marketing.

Here he tells us more about his placement and the opportunities it has brought him.

 

Why did you choose the MBA Global?

I found its curriculum appealing; what attracted me the most was the opportunity to undertake an 6 to 8 month placement, because this practical experience aligns perfectly with my aspirations, enabling me to gain real-world exposure and prepare for the UK business landscape, especially after my studies. I hope that this degree will equip me with the necessary skills and insights for the UK job market.

 

What type of career did you have in Bangladesh?

I started working as a Medical Sales Rep for a local pharmaceutical company in 2008, then in 2010, I transitioned to a multinational pharmaceutical powerhouse, Novartis. I joined Nestle Bangladesh Ltd in 2012, initially as an Area Nutrition Officer, and over the years, my roles evolved as I advanced within Nestle. By 2015, I was promoted to the position of Closed Loop Marketing Officer and relocated to Nestle Bangladesh’s Head Office.

In 2016, I moved to Nestle India’s Head Office in Gurgaon, Delhi, where I worked as Assistant Manager in Digital Marketing. During this time, I spearheaded two international projects and oversaw the e-commerce business for Nestle Nutrition Brands in India. When I returned to Bangladesh in 2017, I was promoted to the role of Executive-Decision Support Analyst at Nestle Bangladesh, where I also held the responsibility of being the department buyer and led three international projects, which were piloted in Bangladesh and later implemented in other countries.

My career ambitions were anchored in becoming a Marketing Manager, which motivated my decision to pursue advanced professional degrees, and eventually led me to the UK to study the MBA Global. Before leaving Nestle Bangladesh to further my studies, I worked as Regional Executive, managing three teams comprising 24 members within a division in Bangladesh.

 

How did the opportunity to work with Glamorgan Brewing Co come about?

I had applied for a placement at Glamorgan Brewing Co (GBC) after seeing the advertised role, as it seemed to match my interests perfectly. As part of the application process, I was tasked with preparing a presentation on three potential countries that could benefit from having the company’s products exported there. I also decided to make an 8-month export project plan for them, and was delighted to be successful in getting the placement.

My role as Export Project Lead Co-ordinator meant that I was able to join Glamorgan Brewing Co on their first international Trade Mission to Denmark and Norway, which was supported by the Welsh Government. To prepare for this, I received specialist training on exporting, and crafted a detailed presentation on the company and its product line. I reached out to potential buyers in Denmark and Norway, sharing the presentation, which led to two of GBC’s beers being stocked by Norwegian retailer Vinmonopolet – the company’s first global order, which was a significant milestone for GBC.

I am now actively exploring opportunities in EU countries, and am meeting with the Welsh Government’s Japanese and Chinese representatives to discuss potential ventures in Japan and China. The UK Government Department for Business and Trade is also helping me to explore opportunities in the USA, Canada, Germany, France and Sweden.

I’m thoroughly enjoying my role at GBC, where I also oversee the company’s app development project and support the Managing Director with sales data analysis.

 

How has this experience helped prepare you for a job after your studies?

This experience has been instrumental in making me employable after my studies. While exporting wasn't an area that I had prior experience in, this role has been a profound learning curve for me. I'm continuously learning from my colleagues as well as experienced export leaders from the Welsh Government and the UK Export Academy.

I’m fortunate to have had this invaluable opportunity, as I’ve been able to gain an understanding of global business operations in several countries, and an insight into different cultures.
