Meet the lecturer: Dr Ali Roula

Ali Roula Engineering

Dr Ali Roula is a reader in biomedical engineering. He is the programme leader for all electronics MSCs and teaches Digital signal processing and Product innovation modules at Master’s level. He also teached C programming and Digital electronics at undergraduate level.

Describe what you do in one sentence
I communicate my excitement about technology to students and conduct research in brain machine interfacing.

How did you get into it?
I did a PhD in medical imaging, during which I did a bit of lab teaching which I enjoyed very much. I decided then to pursue an academic career.

What was the single most useful learning experience?
Ability to translate scientific and engineering questions into research protocols aimed at delivering novel solutions to problems. 

Best thing about your job? 
I enjoy the freedom to pursue research ideas, and the interaction with students.

Who is your hero?
Carl Sagan, for his unparalleled ability to make complex scientific ideas tangible and exiting.

Advice to people considering this career path.
Be assiduous and curious.
