Our MMath Mathematics course combines modules from the BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree with Masters level material and exposes you to a greater volume of mathematics and at a greater depth compared to the three year degree.
Studying on the MMath Mathematics course also removes the need to source further funding to study a Masters-level qualification.

The first year will provide you with a firm and broad foundation in a range of mathematical areas by extending the material you encountered in core modules at A-level. As well as being introduced to specialist mathematical software, you’ll begin to apply mathematics to determine solutions to a range of real-world problems. You’ll be taught by active researchers and practising mathematicians, which ensures you are exposed to current real-world problems, methodologies, and industry-standard techniques and software.
In subsequent years, you can specialise in areas of mathematics that best suit your interests and career aspirations. These include codes, cryptography, nonlinear systems, financial mathematics, statistics, operational research, partial differential equations and financial modelling. In the third year, you are also able to take a teaching-based module that includes a school placement.
In the fourth year of the MMath degree you can study further modules that are closely related to the research interests of staff and are in areas that many of our recent graduates have found employment. You will also undertake a large project under the close guidance of a lecturer, further exposing you to current mathematical techniques and concepts. Results from recent projects have even been published in international mathematical journals. This means you will stand out from the crowd when making job applications.
Your assessments will involve examinations, coursework and problem-based exercises taught using real-life scenarios.

You will spend 18 hours each week in a mixture of lectures, tutorials and computer laboratories, as well as approximately another 18 hours each week doing exercises based on lecture content.

This recognition underlines the high standard of Maths education at the University. Our MMath degree meets the educational requirement for Chartered status.
As part of this integrated Maths degree you’ll also have the chance to complete a work placement after your second year. This optional year in industry or commerce is a chance to put your skills into practice and understand the workplace, which should help with your grades following your placement. Plus, this experience will look great on your CV and make you more attractive to employers.
Practice is so important in gaining understanding of complex mathematical techniques, which is why we have a state-of-the-art computer laboratory with mathematical software, as well as two student workrooms dedicated to our mathematics students. These facilitate a learning environment where you can work individually or in groups and as they are located next to the staff offices you will have no problem finding help if you get stuck.
In industry, computing power is now vital to aid complex Mathematical calculations on a daily basis. Therefore throughout their Mathematics degree, students will be exposed to a variety of key industry computer packages to facilitate their learning. Those available include core mathematical packages such as Maple and MATLAB; invaluable statistical packages: SAS, IBM SPSS Statistics and R; as well as sought-after Operational Research techniques including optimisation through FICO XPRESS IVE, modelling in Stella and Simulation in Simul8. Students will also be taught sought-after programming skills in Python.

Pass the International Baccalaureate Diploma with a minimum score of 30 overall including a score of 6 in Mathematics at Higher Level. You will also need to obtain a score of 5 or above in English at Standard Level.
Science/Maths Diploma. Must complete 60 credits overall with at least 45 at level 3 and 15 at Level 2. Of the 45 credits at level 3, you will need a minimum of 24 Distinctions, 18 Merits and 3 Passes to include Maths modules
GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics and English at Grade C or above, or their equivalent but consideration is given to individual circumstances

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.
