HRM course helps Wales Millennium Centre shape workplace practices
The MSc Human Resource Management at the University of South Wales is proud to have taught three members of the Human Resources (HR) department at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff. Students Kathryn Jaggard and Leon Phibben, along with graduate Jo Duggan spoke to us about how their experiences on the course have helped shape their practices in the workplace.
Kathryn Jaggard – People & Organisational Development Officer
After finishing my level 5 CIPD qualification, completing the MSc Human Resource Management seemed like the next natural step for me to further my professional career in HR. One of my personal goals is to become a chartered member of the Charted Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) and completing the MSc provides a stepping stone for me to achieve this. So far the course has furthered my knowledge of the HR profession and I am working towards a qualification which will give me the tools required to progress in the workplace.
Hearing from the other students, and having the opportunity to share work experience was the aspect that I most enjoyed. The combination of listening to real life practice as well as taught best practice really enriched my learning experience and has allowed me to bring a breadth of new ideas to the workplace.
During my studies at the University of South Wales’ Newport Campus, the quality of the facilities and support provided by all the staff has exceeded my expectations. The lecturers on the course have a wealth of experience in HR and are always on hand to help with any queries regarding coursework. They also provide us with a great support system and are considerate of part-time students working full-time alongside their studies which can be a difficult task to juggle.
Where possible, I’ve applied the skills developed on the course to my job. This comprises of improved report writing, the ability to tailor my pitches to other departments and the ability to take a more strategic approach to my work. By doing this I have gained confidence in my abilities as a HR professional. My overall experience of the course has been nothing but a positive one and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to further their career in HR.
Leon Phibben – People & Organisational Development Officer
I was able to join the HRM course based on my experiences in the workplace, rather than having studied an undergraduate degree first. I was eager to study the course as I wanted to ensure that my operational and strategic approach to work is considered industry best practice and is recognised on an academic level.
As well as improving my knowledge of HRM the course has helped to develop my knowledge of business as a whole. I have become research savvy which assists me in my day-to-day role, particularly when conducting investigations, dealing with complaints, viewing and creating policies and in response to changes in government legislation. I feel a particular benefit of the course lies in the ability to apply the research undertaken in the workplace, improving my proficiency and professional delivery.
Since completing the postgraduate diploma level last year, I have continued with my studies and will complete the MSc in HRM later this year. Studying these awards has definitely developed my confidence as a HR professional, which I also believe provides others with confidence that the advice and guidance I provide is up-to-date and of sound acumen.
My role as a HR generalist at the Wales Millennium Centre involves dealing with all aspects of HR, some of which include employee relations, equality and diversity, learning and development, resourcing and retention, organisational development and legislative compliance. Due to the nature of the differing departments within the organisation it is often difficult for the team to take a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Through studying the course I have recognised that sharing our knowledge and experiences across the various departments can add significant value to the organisation.
Jo Duggan – People & Organisational Development Manager
I chose to study the MSc Human Resource Management at the University of South Wales to further my knowledge of HRM at both a strategic and operational level, in addition to becoming fully qualified with the CIPD - as it is a great bonus that the course is accredited.
Working for the Wales Millennium Centre, I have utilised the knowledge gained from the course to review and improve internal practices through the application of HRM theory. The course has also helped to strengthen my ability to overcome challenges within my role.
The HR team at the Wales Millennium Centre supports 350 employees over 14 departments and the teams commitment to becoming fully qualified has been invaluable. This has provided added credibility to the professional advice that the team provide predominantly internally, but also externally and this has enhanced the people services provided at the Centre.
