“Before starting the MSc Project Management course, I was working as a Supervisor in Blaenau Gwent Council’s contact centre. I had completed a Leadership and Management Diploma and was really interested in a career where I could work on different activities and with different groups of people across the public sector. Project management seemed the right choice for me. The course having accreditation was a big factor in choosing the University of South Wales. I wanted to bring new skills back to my organisation, especially as I was lucky enough to get sponsored.

The course
I didn’t expect to enjoy the learning experience as much as I did! The course helped me develop my knowledge about project and programme management, but I was pleased to also develop a mind-set of challenging the norm. I met some great people and working with them on group assignments was really rewarding, especially as working in groups was a big challenge. Research was another area in which I surprised myself, and my skills greatly improved.

The ‘live’ project assignment was an excellent experience, and I learnt a great deal about my ability to manage relationships not just within a project team, but with a whole set of stakeholders too.

My career
Without a doubt my experience on the MSc course helped me obtain my first role in project management as I was able to call upon my ‘live’ project assignment to demonstrate some of the skills I learnt. I already counted communication as one of my strengths, but being able to show I could deliver in a project environment was invaluable.

I now manage a large transformation programme at Blaenau Gwent County Council, aimed at changing the way we deal with and serve our customers. While studying the course, I also attained the role of Regional Project Co-ordinator for a European-funded ‘proof of concept’ project that explores the use of data sharing to identify vulnerable people. The two roles have been quite different, but working with a wide range of people is very rewarding.”
