MSc Renewable Energy and Resource Management

The MSc Renewable Energy and Resource Management course will enable you to develop cutting-edge knowledge and high-level practical skills that will allow you to gain employment in this fast moving growth industry.

USW's renewable energy course is based in the Sustainable Environment Research Centre (SERC) a leading and internationally recognised centre for over 30 years. SERC is home to The Wales Centre of Excellence for Anaerobic Digestion and the University of South Wales Centre for Renewable Hydrogen Research and Demonstration.

You will be taught by SERC’s team of academics and researchers who ensure that their modules are informed by the research they carry out day-to-day, meaning that the content you are delivered is up-to-date and relevant to industry.

The subjects taught within the MSc Renewable Energy and Resource Management are underpinned by high quality research which was rated as being internationally excellent or world leading in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

These included research in Anaerobic Digestion, Analytical Technology, Bioelectrochemical Systems, Biohydrogen and Biomethane Production, Hydrogen Energy, Hydrogen Vehicles and Refuelling, Biopolymer Production, Modelling and Control, Nano Materials and Wastewater Treatment.

You will study the following taught modules (20 credits each):

  • Renewable Energy I - Hydro, Tidal, Wave, and Bioenergy
  • Renewable Energy II - Wind, Solar, and Geothermal
  • Solids Resource Management
  • Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes

Plus two from the following optional modules (20 credits each):

  • Hydrogen: Fuel Vector for the Future
  • Energy and Environmental Legislation and Policy
  • Advanced Materials for Energy Applications
  • Anaerobic Treatment Processes

You will also complete a substantial dissertation project (60 credits) within the Sustainable Environment Research Centre where you will be supervised by our team of academics and researchers and have access to our state of the art laboratories.

Your project may also be embedded into one of our externally funded projects such as FLEXIS, and SmartCIRCLE, bringing you into contact with industry and ensuring that your work is of industrial relevance. As part of your dissertation work you will sit in on tutorials on research methods, including practical laboratory based exercises with our research team.

Teaching

Full-time students spend about 12 hours in lectures, seminars, tutorials, and computing based practical sessions each week, usually across two or three days.

Part time students will typically attend one to two days a week. You will also be expected to carry out research and background reading during the remainder of the week individually.

We have an exciting programme of site visits and lab sessions scheduled within your regular timetable to allow you to plan your time in advance.

You will have opportunity throughout your time on the renewable energy course to visit the SERC labs and learn key analytical techniques from our research team. You can find out more about current work on our Twitter channel.

 

Assessment

The taught modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examinations. The dissertation is assessed by a proposal, written thesis and an oral examination. Coursework involves individual and group mini-projects, site visit reports, and oral presentations.

Facilities

You will make use of our state-of-the-art biosystems laboratories including our Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Centre at Baglan.

Lecturers

A minimum 2:2 Honours degree in a science or engineering-related subject. Other applicants will be considered on an individual basis. EU applicants will need to have achieved an overall IELTS score of 6.5.

Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee will remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course.

Additional Costs

Students have access to a wide range of resources including textbooks, publications, and computers in the University’s library and via online resources. In most cases they are more than sufficient to complete a course of study. Where there are additional costs, either obligatory or optional, these are detailed below. Of course students may choose to purchase their own additional personal resources/tools over and above those listed to support their studies at their own expense. All stationery and printing costs are at a student’s own expense.

Please note that students who successfuly secure a placement in industry or abroad to complete their projects would be expected to pay for their own travelling costs to and from the venue during the period of placement. The cost of this will of course vary and some students have also paid for accommodation close to their place of work for the duration of their placement. Students are provided with reading lists but are not expected to buy any books, instead students are actively encouraged to make use of the extensive learning resources of the University. Many books are available as ebooks. The course uses the many computing facilities of the Glyntaff campus (students are not expected to buy their own computer but having a personal PC will help with their studies)
