Andy Protheroe - MSc Safety, Health and Environmental Management graduate

Andrew Protheroe, age 43, from Gorseinon in Swansea, graduated from the MSc Safety, Health and Environmental Management in 2016. He is now the Regional Director for Tennyson Suite Ltd; a Lead Auditor for MSS Global and a Freelance NEBOSH Tutor for Alpha Safety Training.

What influenced you to do the MSc Safety, Health and Environmental Management course?
I had already completed NEBOSH Certificates in Health and Safety, Fire Safety, Environmental Management and Construction, and was midway through the NEBOSH Diplomas in Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Management. A Masters in Safety, Health and Environmental Management seemed the obvious progression from the more practitioner-level qualifications. In addition, some companies I had long desired to consult for asked for a Masters level qualification. I chose the University of South Wales because it came highly recommended from my peers due to its experience of providing Health, Safety, Environmental, Construction and Quality-based courses.

How has the MSc helped your career?
Since undertaking the Safety, Health and Environmental Management course, I have gained both fixed and consultancy-based contracts. I am the Regional Director for Tennyson-Suite Ltd, a specialist Health and Safety Consultancy company with which I am working on a number of CDM projects in the centre of London.

Completing the Masters course has also enabled me to embark on becoming a Chartered Member of IOSH in the near future.

Certain elements of the course have been particularly beneficial. The Environmental module aided my progression in becoming a freelance NEBOSH Environmental Certificate Tutor for Alpha Safety Training in Swansea, from which the students I have so far taken have a 100% pass rate!

The Business Risk Management module, supported by my previous auditing qualifications and degree in Security and Risk Management, enabled me to become a Lead Auditor for MSSGlobal in OHSAS18001:2007 (health and safety), ISO14001:2015 (environmental management), ISO9001:2015 (quality management), and ISO28000:2015 (security in the supply chain). Within this role I have undertaken audits in the UK and Sri Lanka, and shortly in Singapore and Iraq respectively.

What's more, the course has benefited my everyday work immensely due to the amount of background reading required for each module. Unlike other courses I have attended which require the learning of very specific material leading towards a test, the course requires you to identify, analyse and evaluate the subject matter to a deeper degree. I have found that doing this has enabled me to understand and reflect on my own understanding of the subject areas.

I feel I now have a higher-level appreciation of not just health, safety and environmental procedures, but of the many variables that can negatively and indeed positively impact the implementation of the management system as a whole.

What were the highlights?
Apart from the feeling of finding out I had passed the modules, the highlight was getting to know other like-minded health, safety and environmental practitioners and increasing my network of professionals.

Would you recommend the course?
Yes, I would recommend the course both to practitioners relatively new to the industry and senior health and safety professionals with many years’ experience. I say this because the course is designed to develop the understanding of the individual learner, regardless of current knowledge and experience.
