Joanne Kakra Mbroh from Ghana graduated from the MSc Safety Health and Environmental Management in 2016.

How would you describe your course?
The MSc Safety Health and Environmental Management is about organising, implementing and monitoring the health, safety, and environmental aspects in the workplace. It involves managing an organisation’s risk and ensuring continuous improvement of occupational health and safety management and practices. It teaches professionals about the systems to put in place to ensure the safety of employees and a safe workplace to promote productivity and the health and wellbeing of employees.

What influenced you to do it?
As a health, safety and environmental (HSE) professional back in Ghana, I needed to upgrade my knowledge in current health and safety management practices towards professional and personal development. Health and safety is a developing sector in Ghana and professional are highly required to manage health and safety in the workplaces and industries.

What have been the most valuable aspects of the course?
The qualification has made me eligible for a graduate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The course has increased my knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety Management systems (OHS MS) standards to be eligible for OHS MS lead auditor course and become an IRCA registered OHS MS Lead Auditor. I also found is valuable to participate in a mock adjudication programme organised by The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Wales.

How will this qualification help you in your career?
This MSc qualification will give me a competitive advantage in my health and safety career, as I have specialised and practical knowledge in business and risk management to deal with organisational risks and develop solutions to management issues.

With the knowledge and experience I have gained, I will improve my Occupational Health and Safety Consulting business. I will train and mentor young aspiring safety professionals in safety management and practices, in line with international standards. In addition, I have plans to introduce occupational health and safety management as a course in the local universities.

My knowledge in business law will enable me to advise the local government to develop and enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act to ensure the regulation of health and safety in the country.

Would you recommend the course?
I would definitely recommend this course. The modules are very relevant to the health, safety, and environment (HSE) professional, with the right combination of Business and Risk Management, and Business Law to the core health and safety modules. Other universities do not offer this arrangement. The course is recognised by IOSH, and it gives HSE professionals the opportunity to be employed in a range of industries and across the world. Health and safety consultants, supervisors and engineers from all fields would benefit from this course.

Anything else to add?
I achieved great results from the University of South Wales and I am grateful to my lecturers and library staff for their immense support. I had the best time of my life at the University of South Wales.
