This is a great course if you want to push on in your coaching career

Fern Burrage, MSc Sports Coaching and Performance

Fern Burrage graduated from the MSc Sports Coaching and Performance. She is the Manager, Head Coach and player for Cyncoed Ladies FC, and also does work for the Football Association of Wales.

Describe what you do
For Cyncoed, I manage the team, plan and deliver all training sessions and lead match days. And I'm still trying to play a little too!

What do you enjoy about it?
The most enjoyable part for me is the coaching – teaching someone something new, or seeing a player improve or develop definitely carries the greatest reward for me.

What have been your notable achievements?
The most notable achievement for Cyncoed LFC is that we have just retained premiership status in our first season in the top flight of women's football in Wales.

I've also worked at the London 2012 Olympics, coached Wales National U15, U17, and U19 football squads, lived in California for three years coaching football and managed a team that toured Wales with the Super Cup, Champions League and Europa League trophies.

Who or what motivates you?
Me, mainly. Without sounding too cliché, I always want to do better, to improve, to push myself and see how far my mind and body can take me!

What influenced you to do a postgraduate course in Sports Coaching and Performance?
I wanted to prove myself, improve my knowledge and gain a Masters qualification within sport.

How has the qualification helped you in your career?
It’s improved my confidence, increased my knowledge and I’m hoping it will propel me on to the next level within sport and working within a high performance environment.

What are the most valuable aspects of this coaching course?
We had a number of external speakers who spoke to us about their roles within different sporting fields. This was very insightful and beneficial. From a career perspective, the ‘effective coaching’ module was very self-reflective and useful to evaluate and improve my own coaching.

What are the most enjoyable?
I enjoy the strength and conditioning module a lot as this was all new to me and I thoroughly enjoyed the practical element.

Would you recommend this coaching masters?
Absolutely - it's been a fantastic course and the tutors have been brilliant - very approachable, knowledgeable and supportive. I would recommend the course to anyone working within sport and looking to push on in their career or improve themselves.

Anything else you want to mention?
Doing this course was a big decision for me, I hadn't been in education for over 10 years and I questioned if I'd be able to do it. I did – which means you can too! Take the plunge and do it!
