Pro-bikini athlete Lindsay is inspiring more women and girls to take up sport

Lindsay Piper studied BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and MSc Sports Coaching and Performance at USW.

"As a parent, you always want to set a good example to your children. Sometimes that comes from them seeing you survive the knocks that life throws your way!

"Six years ago, I’d just taken the heart-breaking decision to close my business, a children’s boutique in Swansea city centre. It was a real knock to my confidence and for a while, I was very down.

"Not knowing what else to do, I started volunteering with sports clubs in my local area. This sparked an interest and I enrolled on a degree in sports coaching and performance.

"Going back into higher education was a turning point for me. It forced me to be disciplined, which not only restored my confidence in what I was capable of but made me want to achieve more.

"I’d put on three stone since the shop closed so I joined a gym close to Uni and got interested in body building. I am now a pro bikini athlete and recently won a World Title in my category.

"After graduating from my sports degree with a first, I enrolled on the masters coaching course, which I passed with distinctions.

"I now have a great job in sport where I am able to encourage others - particularly women and girls - to participate in sport in order to help them cope with life’s ups and downs, and also change their lives for the better."
