MSc Sports Coaching and Performance graduate, Sarah Lewis, tells us how undertaking postgraduate study enhanced her career.
"I am a Senior Lecturer and Curriculum Leader in Gower College Swansea (GCS), and have been in this role for thirteen years. I teach on a variety of courses, including A Levels, Foundation Degree and BTEC. I am also the Head Coach and Co-ordinator of the college netball academy. The academy consists of both a performance and development squad, who complete at a regional and national level.
As part of the academy’s main aims and objectives, I look to develop players from all levels of abilities; whether the player has limited school level playing experience or is a current Welsh representative. I believe it is important as a coach to ensure all players have their own attainable goals, regardless of their level of experience and ability. This has helped to create a successful, enjoyable and motivating academy environment.
I also work as a Tutor/Assessor in Coach Education for Welsh Netball, a role in which I have a great passion for. The role lead me to undertake a Mentoring Course with USW which I loved and found extremely interesting and excelled at. Following this, I decided to enrol in the MSc in Sports Coaching and Performance as I wanted to further my knowledge and understanding in the area and to develop my skills and ability as a coach.
At the time of starting the qualification, I was Wales Netball U21 Assistant Coach. I found that the more I learnt and studied the specific elements of the course, the more confident and understanding of myself developed. I started to check and challenge myself and gained an insight into how I previously coached and my teaching ability.
The Coaching Environment and Effective Coaching modules made me really stop and think and reflect about my coaching style and behaviour. Therefore, enhancing my ability to look at myself and the way I delivered which has and believed this course has helped to enhance myself both personally and professionally. I believe this course has given me the confidence to apply and become successful in my coaching role, now as Wales Senior Assistant Coach."
