Which PcET course is for you?

Both of these post-16 teacher training courses prepare you for work with learners in the post-compulsory education and training (PcET) sector. This includes further education colleges, adult and community education, sixth form centres, prison education and training organisations. The age of the students you will teach will range from 16 years to post retirement age.


Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PgCE) in Post compulsory Education and Training (PcET)

  • The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education is available to applicants who are graduates on entry. This PgCE is a nationally recognised teaching qualification for the post compulsory education and training sector.
  • This teaching course can be studied on a two year, part-time (in-service) or one year full-time (pre-service) basis.
  • Academic assessment is at Level 5 (20 credits) and Level 6 (100 credits).
  • Part-time students are expected to secure their own teaching work placement in an appropriate PcET environment. Full-time students will be provided with a suitable supported placement by the University. Find out more information about teaching placements.
  • Whilst on the course, students will develop their academic writing and scholarship and may in future go on to further study e.g. higher degrees or other relevant professional qualifications.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Post compulsory Education and Training (PcET)

  • The Postgraduate Certificate in Education is available to applicants who are graduates on entry. This PGCE, is a nationally recognised teaching qualification for teaching in the post compulsory education and training sector.
  • This teaching course can be studied on a two year, part-time (in-service) or one year full-time (pre-service) basis.
  • Academic assessment is at Level 6 (60 credits) and Level 7 (60 credits).
  • You will need to demonstrate reading and writing at master’s level (e.g. through more critical writing, and academic engagement).
  • Part-time students are expected to secure their own teaching work placement in an appropriate PcET environment. Full-time students will be provided with a suitable supported placement by the University. Find out more information about teaching placements.
  • On completion, students will gain 60 credits at master's level which can count towards an MA in Education.
  • At interview, academics will help you to determine which teaching course is the most appropriate for you.

Please note: These courses do not provide Qualified Teacher Status for teaching in Primary or Secondary schools.
