Turning my childhood passion into a career

My family’s glowing praise for USW sealed the deal.

Choosing to study Criminology at USW

My fascination with criminology began when I was about eight years old, captivated by a true crime documentary. That early interest evolved into a passion that shaped my educational journey. Although my small-town school didn’t offer criminology at A level, I pursued professional policing at college, which cemented my desire to study criminology. When it came time to choose a university, my family’s glowing praise for the University of South Wales (USW) sealed the deal. Since 2020, USW has been my dream university.

Attending multiple open days confirmed USW was the perfect fit. The combination of the crime scene house, Hydra simulation, and the cold case unit was unmatched. Other universities only offered parts of these facilities, but USW had it all. The lecturers were inspiring, and the campus community felt welcoming and vibrant.

Life as a student

During my studies, I’ve had the chance to work with industry professionals, including placements and interactive sessions with police and probation officers. My applied criminology project stands out as a highlight. We’ve surveyed students about campus safety, addressing issues like walking between lectures in the dark. It’s hands-on work that’s both insightful and impactful.

Living on campus has also been an incredible experience, fostering a strong sense of community. Looking ahead, I aim to specialise in youth justice, particularly supporting young people with learning difficulties during rehabilitation.

USW has given me the confidence and skills to pursue a career in criminology, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place to study.
