Why I chose USW

My journey into Graphic Communication was a bit unique. Initially, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but after attending an Open Day and talking with my course leaders, Ryan and Stephen, I saw how industry-focused this course is and how much depth it offers. I’d considered areas like illustration and animation, but Graphic Communication felt like a more concrete career path.

The campus is well-equipped for creativity, with industry-standard resources like green screen rooms and camera rentals that allow us to explore a variety of media. The staff here really engage with you—it’s like having a mentor rather than just a lecturer.

Real-world experience and future ambitions

The hands-on experience has been fantastic. In our first year, we worked on a live brief for Gwent Police, designing a social media campaign on summer safety. These real-world projects give us invaluable insights into the industry. One of my favourite projects was a typography module where I designed a mock campaign for the Cardiff Museum, creating a series of posters and ads for a fictional exhibit. It was inspiring to have creative freedom and dig deep into a topic that resonated with me.

After graduating, I hope to start in a junior role at an agency, eventually working towards creating my own. For future students, my advice is to start building a portfolio and get familiar with design tools—this course will help you thrive if you’re ready to dive in.
