Building a professional network during my studies

USW’s course stood out as one of the few in the UK that provides an in-depth approach to VFX.

Turning an interest into a qualification at the University of South Wales

I chose to study Visual Effects and Motion Graphics because I developed a strong interest in editing while doing a BTEC in film production at college. I knew I wanted to focus on the post-production side of things, and USW’s course stood out as one of the few in the UK that provides an in-depth approach to VFX.

USW was the obvious choice for me after attending Open Days at various universities. Being from Wales, I wanted to study in Cardiff as it’s a dynamic, creative city with plenty of events and spaces geared toward artistic expression. The smaller class sizes and knowledgeable faculty made it stand out. I attended two Open Days, and I liked how I could interact closely with lecturers and other students, unlike at other universities where it felt like you’d just be another face in a large crowd.

Getting career-ready at the University

During the course, I've had valuable opportunities to connect with industry professionals. Through networking exercises and case studies, I’ve been able to build a LinkedIn network and gather insights directly from those working in the field. My favourite projects have been those with creative freedom, like the title sequence assignment in my first year, where we had room to experiment and bring our own ideas to life.

After graduating, I hope to work in 3D modelling, whether in visual effects or motion graphics. The facilities at USW have prepared me well for this, providing access to industry-standard tools like Cinema 4D, Maya, and Adobe Suite, along with practical spaces such as green screen rooms and motion capture studios.
