Turning my passion for film into a career

When it came to choosing a career, I realised that if film was something I kept returning to, it might be the path for me.

Choosing to study Film at the University of South Wales

My journey into film was a bit of a dive into the unknown. Growing up, I was always involved in creative projects related to film, although never professionally. When it came to choosing a career, I realised that if film was something I kept returning to, it might be the path for me. Since then, I’ve loved every moment of it.

I chose USW because I’d already spent a year in Cardiff and fell in love with the city. I knew USW had a great film department and, by then, I’d made connections that felt like home. Though I missed Open Days, the University has provided fantastic opportunities, like collaborating with students on real-world projects and volunteering at film festivals. These experiences have been invaluable for networking and gaining practical knowledge.

My favourite part of the course has been the editing workshops. I enjoy learning about the industry as a whole, from directing to sound design, but editing truly captivates me. Cardiff’s creative vibe, with its mix of architecture and frequent filming locations, keeps me inspired daily.

Looking forward to a creative career

Looking ahead, I’d love to work in an editing house or cutting room, ideally staying connected to Cardiff but open to exploring. For anyone interested in film, my advice is to start making your own short films and experiment with software – it’s a great way to build skills. One project I’m especially proud of is my film Warmth, where I experimented with dialogue and colour grading, deepening my appreciation for storytelling.
