Georgo Shangov - BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

Georgi Shangov, from Sofia, Bulgaria is a second year student studying BSc Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. Here is what he shared about his University experience:

“Since I was a little boy, I’ve always been fascinated by airplanes. So when I graduated from high school I knew exactly what I want to do – Aircraft Engineering. And I chose this university to continue my education, and honestly it is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I am currently doing my second year in BSc Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, and it is an amazing course. The university has recently established a partnership with British Airways which are one of the biggest companies in aviation sector. The whole course is run under the EASA regulations and it is approved by the Civil Aviation Authority. It allows you to get your aircraft maintenance licence in only 2 years instead of 5. I admit it gets a bit tough sometimes but the lecturers are excellent and do a lot to help you understand, and after all, that’s why I am here – to study. And the most important part of the course is that you can get a hands on experience, on the University’s full-sized aircraft.

The student life is great. It is full of great people and you easy find friends here. The best thing is that you are constantly meeting people with your interests. The town where one of the University’s campuses is situated is a small and friendly town called Treforest, but it has absolutely everything you need. And if you are keen on going to clubs and discos, you can always catch a train or a bus to Cardiff which is roughly 20 minutes from the campus. Or you can take again a 20 minutes’ walk to Pontypridd which is the nearest bigger town. There are a lot of interesting activities happening on campus as well. You can always spend your afternoon at the Sport Centre, or just visit the Students’ Union. There are a lot of social events and activities happening there, so there is no way you will feel bored.”

Lili is in her final year of her BA Art Practice course. She has shared her experiences so far being a student on the course and living in Wales.

Why did you choose to study at University of South Wales?
I have chosen University of South Wales because of the wide range of courses that it offers. I found the course I was looking for, related to my art experience.

What advice would you give to any students who are thinking of studying at USW?
USW can give you the knowledge you are looking for, offering every single course just in one university! You experience meeting with many International and European students, and you can learn more about their culture.

What’s your number one student experience so far?
My number one student experience is the trips that university organizes. Every year we go to different country, visiting many museums and cultural monuments. That is how you became closer with your course mates, and you gain experience and inspiration from the richness of the world.

Has your learning experience at South Wales been positive?
The university offers everything we need for the course – wide halls and studios, with all of the needed art equipment and materials. The teaching staff is always ready to help, friendly, even funny. We work with the newest IT facilities, and we have huge library with various learning sources.

Have you enjoyed your University experience at South Wales so far?
I do enjoy my course, because it is different, diverse and we have all of the freedom to express ourselves, which is very important and it helps to find the way we want to go after we graduate. We try all different techniques and we experiment with them.

Favourite places to visit or things to do in Wales?
Wales has beautiful landscapes, many castles and museums. In my spare time I am trying to see as much as I can from Wales, discovering different places, visiting prehistoric sites or just going for a walk with no direction, and every time I get to something interesting.

Krasen is currently studying towards his MSc in Sports Coaching. Take a look at what he has got to say about his time so far at USW.

Have you enjoyed your University experience at South Wales so far?
Definitely! It’s been a blast! Working with this awesome teaching staff, playing for the University football team, living in a nice accommodation, everything has been great so far!

What advice would you give to any students who are thinking of studying at USW?
Don’t think twice! Come to University of South Wales, it does not rain as much as you probably think!

What’s your number one student experience so far?
My number one student experience so far has to be going to the Wales – New Zealand rugby match and I’m not even a rugby fan! The passion for rugby here is amazing and the atmosphere at the Millennium Stadium is unlike any other.

Why did you choose to study at University of South Wales?
Well, as an undergraduate student I took part in the Erasmus programme and I spent a year studying abroad, in Belgium. Therefore, having experienced student life outside of Bulgaria, I was keen on studying a Master programme abroad. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the lovely people at Integral, Veliko Turnovo, who advised me wisely to choose the University of South Wales and facilitated every step of the application process. I was awarded 1500 pounds postgraduate scholarship, so it wasn’t a difficult decision for me. Plus the fact that I am in Wales brings a certain charm to it!

What do you think about the course you are studying?
Where do I begin? First of all, the course leader, Mel Tuckwell is marvellous. She has coached netball internationally, but what impresses me the most is her comprehensive understanding of all sports and she is a really down to Earth kind of a person. I learn a lot from my peers too, they all have coaching experience whether this is in rugby, gymnastics or netball and every session feels like a coaching clinic.

Has your learning experience at South Wales been positive?
I think your IT system – Moodle makes everything so easy! I have easy access to all the learning materials that I need. And if that is not enough I can always call, e-mail or skype any of the lecturers and they would be buzzing to help me.

The sporting facilities in Treforest are jaw-dropping, it has a number of great grass and Astroturf grounds and it is just across the street from Cardiff City Academy. In conclusion, if you love sport and you want to be active during your studies, University of South Wales can provide you with anything you need.
