A creative spark and choosing USW
My passion for media began back in Year 6 when I first discovered iMovie on iPad. I loved experimenting with the pre-made trailers and editing tools, and seeing my ideas come to life on screen. Throughout school and A-levels, I explored various aspects of media, which led me to this course because it offers a bit of everything.
I chose USW partly for its proximity—living an hour from Cardiff made it convenient—but also because of its industry-grade equipment and the hands-on experience it offers. Although I couldn’t attend an Open Day, I did come to a Clearing Open Day where I had a personal tour with Lesley, the head of cinema and film, which sealed the deal.
Find your courseIndustry briefs and future possibilities
So far, I’ve loved the client brief module, where we work with real companies. I’m currently paired with Alacrity, a Welsh start-up mentorship group, to create a social media campaign. Scriptwriting has been my favourite aspect—I enjoy organising my ideas in a structured way, which I know will be useful for my career.
I’m not entirely sure of my exact career path yet, but USW has equipped me with the skills to explore a variety of roles. My advice for future students? Take every opportunity. I wish I’d been more proactive in my first year, but now I jump at every chance to get involved. This course gives you the skills and confidence to thrive in the media world!
