Changing direction and discovering USW

I'm Freddie, a third-year BA (Hons) Sports Journalism student at USW. I chose this course because it perfectly merges my passion for sports and my love for talking about it. I initially had a university place elsewhere, but during my gap year, I started to rethink my plans. A search on UCAS led me to this course, and I haven’t looked back since.

USW stood out to me because it offered the change I wanted. Moving from Cambridge to Cardiff felt like the right balance—far enough to be a new experience but still comfortable. Living in Cardiff has been a bonus, too—it’s a creative city with endless live music and sports events, perfect for a journalism student.

Gaining experience and building confidence

Since starting, I’ve had fantastic industry experiences. In my second year, I worked with Cardiff City FC for a season, building valuable contacts and meeting influential people. I’ve also had media training sessions with renowned footballers and currently manage social media for Newport County’s academy. These opportunities came through USW, which has been key in connecting me with the industry.

The course itself is incredibly diverse. I’ve gained skills in written journalism, video editing, photography, social media, and more. Looking forward, I feel well-prepared and supported by USW’s facilities and contacts, and I’m excited to see where my skills will take me in the industry.
