From my very first placement, I knew I'd found where I belong.
Discovering my passion for Midwifery
My passion for midwifery began with the empowering experiences I had when giving birth to my own children. I vividly recall being 19, feeling scared during labour, and the incredible midwife who calmed me, made me feel in control, and supported me throughout. That profound experience planted a seed of inspiration that only grew stronger with each child I had. Eventually, after years of working as a teaching assistant and raising my family, I decided it was finally time to pursue my dream.
Choosing USW was an easy decision for me. Attending the Open Day reinforced that feeling; the lecturers were warm and welcoming, the environment felt supportive, and I instantly knew this was where I wanted to study. The passion and dedication of the academic staff stood out to me, and I felt confident that USW would provide me with the skills and support to succeed.
Find your courseExperiences that shape my future
Midwifery at USW is incredibly hands-on, combining theory and placements from the outset. Early exposure to clinical practice made me realise how varied and impactful midwifery truly is, far beyond what I had imagined. Placements at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr, where I'm from, have been particularly special. I immediately felt at home there, supported by an amazing team. This is exactly where I hope to work once I qualify.
The friendships, the supportive lecturers, and opportunities like attending midwifery conferences and meeting inspirational leaders in the field, including Princess Anne, have made my journey at USW exceptional. My advice to anyone thinking about midwifery is to be prepared—it’s tough, but the rewards are indescribably greater. If you have the passion, go for it, because you’ll never regret it.
