Midwifery is hard work but it's the most rewarding job - just go for it.

Discovering my calling in Midwifery

My journey into midwifery started through personal experience. When complications during my pregnancy led to an extended hospital stay, the compassion and support from the midwives deeply impacted me. Two separate midwives suggested I consider midwifery, sparking a realisation that this could be my path. Initially apprehensive about returning to education, encouragement from those around me helped build my confidence, leading me eventually to enrol at USW.

I chose USW due to strong recommendations from former students who praised the university’s exceptional support system. Their reassurance about both academic and emotional support convinced me that USW was the ideal place for me to pursue midwifery.

I PARTICULARLY ENJOYED WORKING ALONGSIDE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS SUCH AS OBSTETRICIANS, ANAESTHETISTS, AND NEONATAL NURSES.

Practical experiences and future goals

My placements at USW have allowed me to experience various aspects of midwifery and beyond. I particularly enjoyed working alongside different healthcare professionals such as obstetricians, anaesthetists, and neonatal nurses. This interprofessional exposure deepened my understanding of the healthcare environment and gave me greater appreciation for the roles of my colleagues.

After graduating, I aim to work on a labour ward because the fast-paced environment suits my personality, though I remain open-minded to other areas. For future students, my advice is straightforward: don’t fear setbacks—every challenge you overcome makes you stronger. If you feel passionately about supporting women through vulnerable moments, midwifery at USW is a perfect choice.
