Mark Making

BA (Hons) Art Practice students get their claws into the primary nature of mark making.

During a workshop titled ‘The choreography of drawing’, first year students were challenged to find alternative ways to grip drawing tools using unfamiliar origins for movement within the frame of the human body. They took different approaches to relax rational control of the marks they make and experimented using their knee joints and knuckles, instead of their wrist or elbow.

Following the task, using the same sheets of paper, the students went on to explore the idea of expanded drawing by making 3D drawing constructions.
