BBC Children in Need mascot Pudsey Bear paid a visit to the University of South Wales’s City Campus in Newport this week for a special music activity day.

Run by the Dyscovery Centre at the University, the event saw children from Newport and the surrounding areas take part in music activities as part of a summer holiday scheme.

The Dyscovery Centre was set up more than 15 years ago to provide services for children and adults with developmental disorders, including Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD and Dyscalculia.

Dr Catherine Purcell, Senior Research Fellow and Sally Scott-Roberts, Occupational Therapist and Senior Lecturer at the Dyscovery Centre, were awarded funding from BBC Children in Need to run the series of four themed activity days, which gave the children a taste of animation, fashion design, the environment and music.

The aim of the activity days was to provide a safe environment for children to explore their creative ideas, make new friends and counter barriers to participation. The events were also aimed at signposting parents to community projects where children may be able to continue with some of their newfound interests.

The children, all aged between six and 13, took part in different musical activities at this week’s event, which was attended by staff and students from the BA (Hons) Creative Sound and Music degree course.

Speaking about the success of the activity days, Dr Catherine Purcell said: “All four days have proved to be extremely worthwhile and valuable to the children involved. They have found new activities that they enjoy and will hopefully continue to do so in the future.”

Joel, who is 12 and lives in Newport, said: “It’s been a great experience. My favourite part was getting to use the thunder shaker, a special instrument that creates the sound of thunder.”

Mia, eight, from Newport, added: “I love singing and today we’ve been playing instruments along to the beat of We Will Rock You, which was awesome.”
