USW teams up with Principality to offer students paid degrees

Students at the University of South Wales who want to get ahead in business whilst earning a degree can apply for a new work and study route with Principality Building Society.

Wales’s largest building society has partnered with the University on its Network75 programme to offer a handful of students a sponsored five-year placement.

During term time, Network75 students work in a local business three days a week and attend university two days a week, with all university fees being paid for by Principality.

From 2015, the Society will be taking in its first intake of undergraduates in its IT department. It plans to employ three students on a BSC (Hons) in Computing.

Louise Hawker, Management Coordinator at Network75, said: “We are delighted to have Principality on board for the Network75 scheme. It is a fantastic Welsh company that our students will be able to learn a lot from.

“From our work with other companies, Network75 has achieved 100 per cent employability and we are confident that this great success story will continue with Principality’s support.”

Paul Tiernan, Principality Building Society’s Group IT Director, said: “As a mutual building society, we have a commitment to our Welsh communities and are always looking at ways to give something back, not simply financially but in many other ways.

“Network75 is a brilliant way for us to achieve that – helping talented students of the University of South Wales to get a firm foot on the career ladder. Students will get the best in-work training in IT at the same time as earning a degree and we get to keep the talent of the university in our capital.”

Principality employs more than 100 people in a range of IT-based roles throughout the Principality Group which looks after the Principality Building Society IT department, Principality Commercial as well as the IT systems for Nemo Personal Finance, its subsidiary business.

As part of the Network75 course, Principality, allow students to learn skills in all of the IT areas across the Group as well as other business areas in order to provide broad experience in all skill types required in a modern IT environment for financial services.

This will include gathering business requirements, project management and administration, design, development, testing, delivery and architecture governance as well as operations, monitoring, infrastructure services, helpdesk, corporate services and service delivery.
