Richard Parfitt

Welsh songwriter and musician Richard J Parfitt joins the University of South Wales this week as Senior Lecturer in Popular and Commercial Music.

Best known for being the front man of the successful rock trio 60ft Dolls during the 1990s, Richard brings his 25 years of experience in the industry to his new role in the Faculty of Creative Industries at the University’s Cardiff Campus. He will also be Course Leader for the new Masters course in Songwriting and Production.

During his time with the band, Richard wrote three top 40 singles and a top 40 album. He has sold over a million records and has been presented with a platinum album.

Richard is studying for a PhD and is no stranger to the world of education, having served as an advisor for the Welsh Cultural Olympiad, delivered songwriting masterclasses at numerous universities and, more recently, has directed the Masters in song writing at Bath Spa University.

As a professional songwriter, musician and manager, Richard has worked with artists such as Welsh songstress Duffy and provided music for Universal Films. As a session musician, Richard has worked and played guitar for Dido, as well as Bernard Butler, Urge Overkill and Lene Marlin.

On his new role at USW, Richard said: “It’s exciting to be joining the University at this time when there are so many opportunities and great developments. Wales has a musical heritage that is the envy of the world, and the potential for the University to be known as a centre of excellence in Popular Music is a very real and stimulating prospect.”

Richard will be welcoming renowned music producer Greg Haver to the University’s Cardiff Campus on Tuesday 24 April, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. The free public lecture, entitled ‘An Insight into the Music Industry Today’, will see Greg talk about his career, which has included playing drums with Tom Jones on his multi platinum album Reload, and working alongside the Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia and the Super Furry Animals.

Greg will also consider the challenges in maintaining a professional career in the ever-changing music business of the 21st century. Reserve your place now
