CREATIVE undergraduates at the University of South Wales (USW) have been getting a taste of European flair as part of their studies.

Those studying Advertising Design have been involved in ‘immersive learning’, which aims to enhance their experiences, expose them to live projects, and connect the various stages of their course.

Businesses involved in the creative industries have provided a range of module-related workshops, talks, and visits, including key industry contacts such as S3 Advertising, Work Shop Play - the consumer data team from Exterion Media - YCN, Yolk Recruitment, Traveline Cymru, SBW and Stuff.

A highlight for the third-year students has been working with Paris-based agency AKQA, on briefs for big brands including Google, Chanel, Eurostar, and Nike.

“We’ve been able to take advantage of the amazing new facilities as part of the enhanced Cardiff campus,” said Lee Thomas, course leader for Advertising Design.

“The new student pitching room has been an asset already – the students were able to skype AKQA in Paris from here last week, and then they’ll come over to see us in December when we’ll use the space for students to pitch their ideas to them.”

As well as AKQA Paris, students are also working on researching briefs for Welsh Water, Exterion Media UK, and Epoch Bristol, as well as on a collaborative project for Diverse Cymru, with Photography and Graphic Communication students.

Three of the final-year students who are working with Epoch will also secure a two-week internship with the company in Bristol next year.

“Our new learning spaces as part of the enhanced Cardiff campus are making it easier than ever before to be able to work creatively on these sorts of projects, especially in terms of collaboration,” added Lee, who himself worked in industry as a designer for many years before beginning his career in education.

“For example, all our studios are set up with different learning environments – different sorts of seating and table layouts, some casual areas, that sort of thing.

“The open creative spaces on each floor are designed with this in mind too – we want our students to learn outside as well as inside the classroom.”
