A message from your Students’ Union

Welcome to USW. We are your Students’ Union (USWSU), and we exist to make sure you get the most out of your university experience at USW.

From activities, events, and venues to volunteering and skill development, we strive to make sure you have the chance to enrich every aspect of your student life. We support over 100 clubs, teams, and societies, 700 Student Voice Reps and Course Reps, 29 Student Councillors and annually hold over 150 events at our venues. So, whether you want to develop your skills, become a representative on your course or socialise with friends, we’ve got it all. And because we’re for students, not for profit, we make sure every investment you make at your SU is put back into the things you care about most.

Support

Life at university can sometimes be a little overwhelming; from leaving home for the first time to being in your final year with us. Throughout your university journey, we're here for you.  Our dedicated Welfare and Education officers exist to support you; so, if you think your course isn't right for you or you're feeling homesick, our officers can help. You can call, email, or drop us a message on our Facebook page and our team will get back to you. If it's not something we can resolve straight away, we can arrange to meet you in person or online.

The Students’ Union’s contact information can be found on the Contact Us webpage. If you have any questions, queries, or concerns, please get in touch.

Student Voice

Are you passionate about speaking up on behalf of other students?  We are seeking representatives for our Student Council and Student Voice Forum. The Student Voice Forum concerns all things academic, and Student Council steer the Union in the right direction to enhance the student lifestyle. Both set policies and work with the university. Get involved by visiting our website for full job descriptions and advice on how to apply.

Teams, Clubs and Societies

All our teams, clubs and societies will be back up and running from the start of the new academic year. Some may be restricted by governing body guidelines, but activities will be as near to normal as possible.  The British Universities leagues are also going ahead, so there will be plenty of sporting action to look forward to. If you live close to Treforest campus, you will be able to take part in pre-season training; fill in this form and we'll get back to you with further information.  Updates on when activities are starting can be found on our website.

Food venues

On Treforest campus, a variety of food and drinks are on offer from street-style food including noodles, wraps, pizza, paninis, rolls, and sandwiches to a more traditional, pub-style menu. Just order your food and drink and we’ll bring it to you wherever you choose to sit: in the bar, the coffee shop or on one of our terraces.  On Cardiff campus, the Zen Bar offers a crossover between a traditional coffee shop ‘proud to serve Starbucks’ and a continental style café bar, serving a range of drinks.

Shops

The Students’ Union has shops on Treforest, Glyntaff, Newport and Cardiff campuses.   The Students’ Union shop on Treforest campus offers a full range of convenience goods, stationery and computer consumables, USW merchandise and more.  The Students’ Union shops in Glyntaff, Cardiff and Newport offer a limited range of products which include drinks, snacks and confectionery, USW merchandise and stationery. The shops also provide essentials relevant to the campuses and courses studied there, such as art materials and lab equipment. USW merchandise is also available through our online shop.  For shop and venue opening hours, visit our website.

Freshers' Fair

We're going bigger and better for 2021!  The Students’ Union is teaming up with USW to bring you Welcome Fest, which will showcase all that we have to offer across our campuses.  Welcome Fest will feature stalls, demonstrations, and an opportunity for you to find out more about your Students’ Union. You will be able to sign up for teams, clubs, and societies, get to meet our Officers and learn about the support that's available to you. For more information about Freshers’, visit the Official Freshers’ 2021 website

We can't wait to meet and welcome you all to USWSU!

Please note, off-campus students who are studying with a partner college should check guidance and communication from their college, about local attendance, assessment and teaching arrangements.
