Facilities and services available on-campus next term | Professor Martin Steggall, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Student Experience

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you all back to campus this term and to seeing many more of you accessing learning and teaching on our sites. Our various facilities and services will also be available to support you during your time on our campuses. Below you will find details of some of the key services that are available for you.

  • The accommodation at our Treforest campus is open, and once again students will be arriving across a week, rather than a weekend, to stagger safe arrivals. We have an experienced team on hand to support students who may need to self-isolate either on arrival or during the year. We are also continuing to work closely with our private providers, Unite in Cardiff and Campus Living Villages in Newport.
  • The Advice Zoneswill be open on each campus, where staff will be on hand to answer queries and signpost students to the full range of student support services, including Careers, Disability Service, Study Skills, Student Money, and the Wellbeing Service. Appointments for some of these services may remain digital for the next term.
  • All of the catering outlets will be open from Monday 20 September - current opening hours can be viewed on the catering website.
  • FitZone at the Treforest Campus is open, giving you access to the gym and strength room, health and fitness classes, squash court, badminton, basketball and the studio. For more information about what’s available, how to book, and opening times, please visit the FitZone webpage.
  • All of our libraries are open, including for book loans, browsing and to access study spaces. The request and collect service for book loans also remains in place for anyone who wishes to use this. Students can also collect self-service laptops from the library. To view the latest library updates, along with the opening hours, please visit the library pages on UniLife. The online library is also available, which gives you access to many different ebooks, ejournals and databases, to assist you in your studies.
  • All of the Students’ Union facilities will be open this term, including the various food outlets and bars at Treforest and Cardiff Campuses, as well as the shops on each campus. The nightclub at Treforest will also be reopening. All of the SU teams, clubs and societies will be back up and running from the start of the new academic year. Some may be restricted by governing body guidelines, but activities will be as near to normal as possible. The British Universities leagues are also going ahead, so there will be plenty of sporting action to look forward to. Find out more on the SU website.
Risk assessments have been undertaken to ensure that we can provide these services to you as safely as possible. More information will be sent to you shortly with a detailed Campus User Guide, letting you know what safety measures are in place that we will be asking you all to follow when you are attending one of our campuses.

We are also asking everyone to have their Covid-19 vaccination before they come to campus. If you have not yet received your vaccine, you can find the contact details for Welsh local health boards on the Welsh Government website, as well as more information on the NHS website.

For UK students, if you are moving to term-time accommodation, then you also are encouraged to have a Covid-19 test shortly before you move. You can do this via the NHS Covid-19 test booking system - please answer the questions normally, and select ‘no’ when asked if you have symptoms, select ‘no’ when asked if you are an essential worker (unless this is true for you) and select ‘I’ve been told to get a test by my nursery, work or place of education’ and then ‘I’m a student returning to university in Wales’ when asked ‘why are you asking for a test?’.

For international students, information on arrivals, testing and quarantine support can be found here

WelcomeFest | Booking now open

USW and the Students’ Union have partnered to create a new event for 2021 to welcome new and existing students to our campuses! The WelcomeFest will be held at each campus - there will be a main stage, live music and entertainment, free food tasters and drinks, as well as a local traders’ market and information stalls for all of the things you need to know about USW. It will also incorporate elements of freshers’ fairs, which are traditionally held at the start of term, with the SU hosting stalls and practical demonstrations.

It’s a mainly outdoors event, with covered areas, so check the weather before you arrive and either wrap up warm or bring your sunscreen (you never can quite tell which way it will go here in Wales!).

Booking is now open, so to secure your free tickets, please visit the relevant campus booking page below:

  • Newport - Monday 20 September
  • Cardiff - Tuesday 21 September
  • Treforest - Wednesday 22 September to Friday 24 September

Please note, off-campus students who are studying with a partner college should check guidance and communication from their college, about local attendance, assessment and teaching arrangements.
