Football festival sees RCT schools get sporty

RCT Footy Fest - Leanne Wood

A football festival organised by Sport students at the University of South Wales helped give children from eight Rhondda Cynon Taff schools a taste of the beautiful game.

Held on 29 March at Pentre Park, RCT Footy Fest involved teams from Maerdy, Penyrenglyn, Ynyswen, Treorchy, Bronllwyn, Llantrisant, Gelli and Parc Primary Schools, and was opened by Rhondda AM and Leader of Plaid Cymru, Leanne Wood (pictured above).

The overall cup winners (pictured above) were Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Ynyswen, who beat Treorchy Primary 1-0. The winners of the plate were Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Bronllwyn, who beat Gelli Primary 2-0.

USW Football Coaching and Development student Brendan Hopkins, who helped organise the event, said: “We decided to run an event aimed at primary schools, to help increase participation in football across Rhondda Cynon Taff.

“The festival encouraged interaction between the teams so that the children could meet new people and break down social barriers, which will be a huge help to them as they transition from primary to secondary school.

“It was such a successful event that we now hope to run it once every school term, in the hope we can involve many more schools and pupils.”

The event was sponsored by Active Valleys, who provided funding for the venue, trophies and wristbands for each child. Total Team Wear UK provided both winning teams with a £200 voucher towards purchases from them, while every other school received a £50 voucher.
