Journalism graduate does the double

BAJournalism graduate Kelly Gumbley has done the double – by being shortlisted for two awards in one week.

Kelly was shortlisted for the Cudlipp Student Journalism Award, for her documentary ‘Battle of the sexes: The truth behind lad culture on campus’, which investigates lad culture at universities.

A joint initiative of the London Press Club and Daily Mirror, the Cudlipp award is given to a student who has made ‘an outstanding contribution to journalism’ and explored ‘an issue of public interest or concern which exemplifies lucid and graphic communication’.

Kelly was one of five finalists for the award, which is named after Hugh (later Baron) Cudlipp, the Welsh journalist who became a national newspaper editor and chairman of the Daily Mirror group.

On Friday night (23 March), Kelly was also at the Wales Media Awards, as one of three finalists in the student journalist of the year category.

She said: “Delighted is an understatement! Thank you BA Journalism at USW for making it happen.”

Journalism course leader Craig Hooper said: “This is an amazing but well-earned tribute to Kelly’s drive in pursuing a challenging story and telling it so well. We have had students shortlisted, and winning, journalism awards before but to be shortlisted for two at the same time is fantastic and bodes well for Kelly’s future in journalism.”
