Ross Hall, USW Armed Forces Champion
USW has been recognised as one of Britain’s top
supporters of the armed forces.
The Ministry of Defence has announced USW as one of the 2018 winners of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award, its highest badge of honour for organisations which have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and demonstrated outstanding support for those who serve and have served.
Providing support to mature students looking to build their education after being in work for many years is one of USW’s key aims. This award scheme attracts entries from companies across the UK, in both private and public sectors, and has seen a rapid increase in participation since it launched in 2014.
The importance to USW of providing support for ex-Armed Forces (AF) personnel was first cemented in 2013, by the signing of the AF Covenant, and further enhanced when Ross Hall, Armed Forces veteran, was appointed as USW’s Armed Forces Champion.
USW established the AF Recognition of Prior Learning Scheme in 2015. Through this, Ross was able to ensure that AF leavers and their families were given the right guidance on the education opportunities available to them.
“It is an honour that we are among the first Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in the UK to achieve the Gold award, and are one of only three in the UK to receive this honour. I am extremely proud of our work within the wider AF community, USW have worked hard to ensure we reached the high standards required” Ross said.
“USW is the only Higher Education Institution in Wales to achieve the ERS Gold award and one of only six recipients in Wales and among only 131 companies, local governments and charities to achieve such in the UK since its inception in 2014”
Professor Julie Lydon, USW Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are delighted that the University is among organisations from across Britain who have been recognised for their work in supporting the armed forces.
“To be presented with a Gold Award is fantastic, as it demonstrates the University’s commitment to supporting the wider armed forces community through education.”
