As part of Global Entrepreneurship Week, we are focusing on a number of USW graduates who have turned their interests into a thriving business.

Holly Lloyd, who graduated from BA (Hons) Photography in 2019, is about to launch her own business selling sustainable homeware, with a focus on using recycled materials.

Ty-Celyn (‘Holly House’ in Welsh) is an online store providing eco-friendly products for your home, from bowls, pots and chopping boards made from recycled plastic, to rugs and fabric coasters created using PET yarn (Polyethylene Terephthalate), a type of polyester fibre made from PET recycled plastic containers. The store will also stock a range of products made from sustainable materials such as linen, bamboo, hemp or seagrass.

The 29-year-old, from Powys, Mid Wales, set up her business after years of being passionate about sustainability and environmental issues.

“I’ve always tried to do my best to make better choices, that would have less of an impact on the planet, but I never felt like I was doing enough,” said Holly.

“I always knew I really wanted to start my own business one day, but wasn't brave enough to take the leap straight after graduating. Then came the amazing Launch Accelerator Programme offered by USW.

“Before the Accelerator programme my business was just an idea, but it has given me the perfect opportunity to turn my dream into a reality. The programme has helped me in so many ways, as well as boosting my confidence and self-belief that I can make my business a success.”

The funding provided by the Launch Accelerator Programme is allowing Holly the time she needs to focus on her business full-time, without the stress of finances and monthly living costs. It has also helper her to effectively plan out her initial start-up costs and monthly budget, to help progress the  business.

She added: “The advice from coaching sessions and one-to-one support I have received on the programme so far has been amazing and very motivating, as well as providing me with key tools and information I need to get the best start on my business journey.”
