The University of South Wales has risen 39 places in the People and Planet league table – reflecting a huge improvement in our sustainability activities.

People and Planet is the UK’s largest student network, campaigning on social and environmental issues. Every year they issue a University league, which gives every UK university a score in the same format as a degree. Rankings go from 1st Class to Failed, with a robust and extremely detailed scoring methodology used to produce this ranking.

Here at USW we know how important Sustainability is, to our colleagues and students alike. Over the past two years, an extensive amount of work has been done to make information on the great work we do publicly available. We do not just want to be doing great things – we want as many people as possible to know about it.

Every summer, People and Planet scours the internet to find available information on what institutions are doing related to Sustainability. This is all pulled together into the final score.

We are absolutely thrilled to report that we have now gained a 2:2 class University score. Although only based on publicly available information and therefore not including scores for things which were not published at the time of scoring, the score shows a huge improvement and a big step in the right direction.

There is still a long way to go. Sustainability is a long-term proposition that will never be solved in the short term. This improvement shows that we are making progress and will only be the beginning of our journey to net zero.
