How my career inspired me to pursue a nursing degree

I realised that the natural next step was to become a qualified nurse.

Choosing the University of South Wales to study Nursing

I chose to study nursing after years of working in additional learning needs (ALN) schools, residential care, and personal assistant roles supporting children with complex health needs and life-limiting conditions. My work often involved nursing responsibilities, despite being in education and social care, and I realised that the natural next step was to become a qualified nurse.

When deciding on a university, I considered Cardiff, Swansea, and USW. After attending open days, USW stood out—the clinical simulation centre, which replicates a real hospital setting, was the best I had seen, and the staff were welcoming and supportive. I also knew graduates from USW who had gone on to successful careers and even returned for further study, which reassured me.

During my time at USW, I’ve had three placements a year, covering hospital settings, community nursing, and an away placement in Powys. Each placement has offered a different level of responsibility, helping me apply theory to practice and develop my clinical skills. USW’s skills centre has been instrumental in preparing me, with training in manual handling, injections, NG tube insertion, catheterisation, wound care, and emergency scenarios using VR technology.

Future career plans

Looking ahead, I plan to specialise in neonatal intensive care and eventually apply for Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. USW has given me the best foundation for this journey, with excellent facilities, supportive lecturers, and well-structured placements.

For anyone considering nursing, USW is an excellent choice. The practical experience, industry links, and supportive learning environment have been invaluable in preparing me for my career.
