Changing career directions
My passion for mental health nursing was shaped by personal experiences. A close friend was diagnosed with complex mental health conditions, and I felt a deep sense of guilt for not recognising the signs earlier. That moment sparked my interest in the field. Having worked in healthcare for several years, I always knew I wanted to be in the health profession, but this experience gave me the clarity to specialise in mental health.
Choosing the University of South Wales was an easy decision. While many universities offered the course, USW stood out for its stunning surroundings. Being an outdoorsy person, the waterfalls, castles, and natural beauty of South Wales immediately drew me in. Attending an open day confirmed my choice—the simulation suite was unlike anything I had seen before, and the passion from staff and students convinced me that this was where I wanted to be.

One of the biggest strengths of my course has been the hands-on experience. With three mandatory placements per year, I’ve worked in multiple health boards, hospitals, and rehabilitation centres. My current placement at Cwm Taf Hospital has been the most impactful, where former students now mentor me. After graduating, I plan to continue working in mental health while pursuing a master’s at USW.
My advice? Come in with an open mind. Every day is a learning experience, and mental health nursing is a journey, not a destination.
