A new direction and choosing USW

I'm a third-year photography student at USW. I first fell in love with photography in college, and it became my creative outlet during the Covid pandemic. Originally, I planned to pursue a paramedic degree, but the pandemic’s impact on the NHS led me to rethink my path. I realised I wanted a career I would genuinely enjoy for the rest of my life, and photography was that passion.

USW was a natural choice due to a college link, where I’d heard great things from lecturers and peers who recommended it. Although I didn’t attend an Open Day, I knew I’d have excellent support here. Through USW, I’ve gained valuable industry experience, working with professionals like Megan Winstone, Bedroom Athletics, and photographing events at Chapter Arts Centre.

Building experience and looking ahead

The practical exposure on the course has been invaluable, with hands-on seminars and feedback sessions that allow us to discuss and critique our work with both peers and lecturers. Cardiff has been a fantastic place to live and study, with abundant creative opportunities, plus it’s close to Bristol and London without the high costs.

My future goal is to start my own photography business, though I plan to gain experience first to build a solid foundation. Outside of photography, I’m co-captain of the university hockey team, which has been a great way to meet people from different courses and campuses. For anyone considering photography, I’d advise making sure it’s something you love, as it’s a challenging but deeply rewarding field.
