Exploring photography with industry-standard facilities

USW’s facilities, especially the industry-grade cameras and studio equipment, have been amazing for hands-on learning.

Choosing USW and the Cardiff experience

I chose Photography at USW after attending an Open Day with my college. I visited a few other universities, but USW’s facilities stood out, especially the industry-grade cameras and studio equipment—meaning they were the best fit for me. I was also drawn to the location; having spent time in Cardiff before, I knew it was an exciting and supportive place for students with a lot of opportunities.

Living in Cardiff has definitely enriched my studies. The city is dynamic and creative, making it a great environment to pursue a creative course. Being surrounded by such a thriving arts scene has provided constant inspiration and opportunities to develop my skills.

Industry projects and future goals

One project I’m proud of was a community photography project last year. I photographed the Cardiff University Brass Band, a group I’m part of, capturing individual portraits that turned out really well. Working on real projects has helped me develop both my technical and creative skills.

My favourite experience so far has been a trip to Berlin with other students from Photography, Graphic Communications, and Fashion Marketing. We explored museums and galleries, and it was inspiring to see various photography styles and techniques up close. For the future, I’m considering a PGCE, though I’m keeping my options open as I explore where photography can take me.
