Telling stories through Documentary Photography

Finding inspiration

My interest in documentary photography started with a background in fine art. Photography became a new way for me to express my artistic side, especially through capturing scenes and stories that resonate with me. When I discovered documentary photography, it felt like the perfect fit, allowing me to blend creativity with storytelling.

USW stood out for its course content and its welcoming vibe. Coming from East Sussex, I was drawn to the warmth of Cardiff; people are genuinely friendly, and the city has this lively, community-oriented feel. I attended an Open Day and instantly felt at home after meeting the lecturers and students. The choice felt right.

Industry and ambitions

The course itself has been incredible, filled with real-world experiences. We work on live briefs like Station to Station with Transport for Wales, which allows us to explore creative photojournalism while getting direct feedback from guest lecturers. This hands-on approach has been invaluable. I also loved working on The Wyatt project, where I spent weekends at riding schools across Wales, photographing the culture of the young horse riders—it’s some of my best work yet.

Cardiff has enriched my experience as a creative student, with its mix of urban and rural settings sparking constant inspiration. After graduation, my dream is to work in a gallery, perhaps even start my own, where I can support community art. For anyone considering documentary photography, I say go for it! It’s not just about taking photos; it’s about exploring people, places, and stories.
