Equality

The University of South Wales is number 43 in Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index,  certified as a Disability Confident – Employer and is proud to have achieved the HR Excellence in Research Award acknowledging the support it provides to researchers.

USW is an inclusive place to work, with a clear commitment to furthering LGBT+ equality across all of our policies and practices through an active LGBT+ Staff Network, LGBT+ Role Models and LGBT+ allies.

In 2014, we set up the Women in Academia @USW Network to raise the profile of gender issues for female academics at our institution.

Its aims are to tackle the challenges facing female academics, facilitate supportive relationships between female academics to share problems as well as share best practice and celebrate achievements.

Career development

Academic progression is encouraged whether you are engaged in research and development, innovation and engagement or teaching and learning. There is a clear framework for progression from lecturer through to Reader and Professor.

Research collaboration is an important part of our research culture and we encourage research networking by helping to fund our postgraduate researchers to attend conferences and supporting more established academics to develop relationships with international partners.

The University is engaged with the Welsh Crucible programme, an award-winning programme for early to mid-career researchers. So far, eleven USW academics have completed the programme.

Researchers can also take advantage of the events and development programmes offered by Vitae.

Our Research and Business Engagement Office provides support to all research staff and students. We also run a research mentorship scheme which encourages peer-to-peer support.

Conducting research and applying for funding is a key element to being a researcher.

We have a dedicated team to provide professional advice and guidance when applying for external research funding.

The team can work with you at all stages from helping to form a project idea and finding the most suitable funding source to negotiating with the funder and signing contracts.
