Election to Fellowship is a public recognition of excellence; all LSW Fellows have made an outstanding contribution to the world of learning and have a demonstrable connection to Wales.
Professor Smith said: “It is a great honour to be elected as a Fellow for the Learned Society of Wales. Its really important that senior academics across Wales are represented in this kind of way and for USW to play a significant and ongoing role in the Society and its activities.
“The Learned Society of Wales plays a centrally important role in developing bridges between universities and facilitating the impact of research with policy and practice-based communities, as well as with other partners in Wales and elsewhere. I really look forward to becoming an active member of the Society and would like to very much thank those within USW and other institutions who supported my application."
Professor Hywel Thomas, President of the Society, added: “The expertise of our new Fellows is outstanding. The range of research shows that Wales is well-placed to meet the environmental, technological, social, cultural, political and health challenges we face. The Society’s ability to bring together this talent allows us to initiate and influence important debates about how Wales, the UK and the world can navigate the turbulent waters we are in today.”
