Athena SWAN is Advance HE’s Gender Charter, and acknowledges the actions undertaken by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with relation to gender equality issues. Advance HE is the organisation responsible for helping higher education to shape its future.
The charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.
In 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, and in professional and support roles, and for transgender staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
The application process includes in-depth analyses of qualitative and quantitative information by a self-assessment team to identify key issues with gender equality, and a four-year action plan to help address these.
USW has appointed a member of staff from every Faculty school and Professional Services department to be our Athena SWAN Champions. The Champions form USW’s self-assessment team which is chaired by Dr Louise Bright, Director of Research and Business Engagement.
Dr Bright said: “We are delighted that our work on gender equality, diversity and inclusivity has been recognised by Athena SWAN. It is a testament to the hard work of many people across USW including our Athena SWAN Champions, who worked tirelessly to engage colleagues in their areas to ensure that their voices were heard.
