2025/26 Sport Scholarships

Scholarship information and FAQs
This criteria is provided to act as a guide to the applicant and the awarding panel. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee you a scholarship. The £2000 scholarships will be awarded using the criteria, applied appropriately to the sport and factoring in the number of scholarships available and the quality of applicants.
Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria:
- International representative honours at age-group or senior level.
- Part of the top tier of your National Governing Body’s performance pathway.
- Significant experience at academy level (or above) of a professional sport.
- Continued success at national age group or senior championships.
- The scholarship is only available to UK-domicile students.
All potential sport scholars must provide two references confirming their sporting achievements as part of their application, as well as their own supporting statement.
For undergraduate students:
- Students must apply to the University of South Wales by UCAS Equal Consideration 29 January 2025 and firmly accept their offer of study by UCAS Decline By Default Deadline, 14 May 2025.
- The panel will meet to consider all applications in Early February 2025.
- Applicants will be notified if they are successful by Late March 2025.
- Applications outside these deadlines could be considered on an exceptional basis.
- The £2000 scholarship will be paid in the November of year 0 or year 1 only.
For postgraduate students:
- Students must apply to the University of South Wales by 1st July 2025.
- Students must apply for the scholarship by 1st July 2025.
- The panel will meet to consider all applications in mid-July 2025.
- Applicants will be notified if they are successful by the end of July 2025.
- Applications outside these deadlines could be considered on an exceptional basis.
- The £2000 scholarship will be paid in November 2024 or March 2025, depending on course start date.

Successful Applicants
All sport scholars will be expected to represent the University in BUCS competitions or other University-related competitions and adhere to the University’s Student Code of Conduct. It will also be mandatory that all sport scholars take part in the Students’ Union’s Values and Behaviours training workshop.
Sport Scholars will be required to feature in case studies, promotional material and sign up as student ambassadors (i.e. paid work) ensuring they are available to attend USW Open Days and Applicant Experience Days.
The process to apply for a financial support depends on your category eligibility. Before you apply, we recommend reviewing the eligibility criteria for each award.
All applicants and current students are required to complete our online application form if they are seeking to obtain support.
Once you complete your application, you will receive an automatic notification by email. If you do not receive this notification, please contact [email protected] or [email protected] to confirm receipt.
You will then receive confirmation of your eligibility, and subject to meeting the terms and conditions.
Final confirmation of receipt of award will be confirmed once assessments are undertaken and prior to the start of your course.
The panel’s decision will be final and there is no appeals process.
Please note: any award can only be activated once you have successfully enrolled onto your course.

Once a student has received financial support from a sport scholarship, they cannot re apply the following year for another sport scholarship.
The scholarship is payable in Year 0 or Year 1 of your course, however, the scholarships will be supplemented by additional benefits to a minimum value of £2,500. These benefits will include USW Sport kit, free gym membership, playing subs, strength and conditioning sessions, as well as physiotherapy sessions.
