Dean Parsons is a senior lecturer and Course Leader for the
BSc (Hons) Rugby Coaching and Performance. Dean is a product of the university
from the Sport Science course back in the 90s.
Dean is currently an IRB/Welsh Rugby Union Level 3 Coach,
Sports Coach UK level 3 tutor and a UKCC/WRU Coach Educator actively involved
in delivering the National Governing Body Rugby Awards in the Cardiff Blues and
Newport Gwent Dragons regions. Dean has been involved in the semi-professional
and professional game since the early 90’s, and was employed by Neath RFC as
their strength & conditioning coach when the game turned professional
during the mid 90’s.
Dean has worked with a number of high profile clubs in
recent years including Neath RFC, Pontypridd RFC, Caerphilly RFC and Ebbw Vale
RFC, helping a couple of those sides to European Competition finals. Dean has
also been involved internationally with the Welsh Rugby Union Women’s senior
squad, where he took the role of strength & conditioning coach during their
build up to the 2002 Women’s Rugby World Cup in Barcelona. Dean has also
provided Analytical support to the Welsh National Rugby League senior squad.
Dean is currently employed in the Faculty of Life Sciences
& Education as a senior lecturer. He’s a course leader on two degree
programmes specialising in Rugby Coach Education. Dean’s research interests are
in Reflective practice, Long term athlete development and the role of the
mentor within coaching.
As a sport and exercise scientist, he has offered scientific
consultancy support across a range of sports to many professional athletes.
