Mike Daniels teaches on the BSc Banking, Finance and Investment course and talks to us about his extensive experience in the banking industry.
I have 25 years experience in the banking and finance industry. I spent 17 years at Nationwide, working in a variety of management roles, working across the UK, and later worked with the Lloyds Banking group.
Technology has had a huge impact over how the industry worked over that time, and continues to do so. Customers have moved from paying in paper cheques to online payments, and now paying via mobile phones. The tech giants such as Apple are putting a real pressure on banks to become more customer and digital focussed. The industry as a whole is having to invest heavily in improving digital infrastructures.
Cyber security and data fraud are also big topics in the industry. In recent years all major UK banks have had their customers targeted by phishing scams, with Tesco customers having over 2 million stolen from accounts last year. Banks and other financial organisations are in charge of huge volumes of valuable financial data and are under increasing pressure to keep customer data safe from fraudsters and hackers.
The BSc Banking, Finance and Investment course looks at all of these issues and more - the broad range of modules we study keep up to date with emerging issues, as well as looking at traditional academic materials. We have an experienced teaching team from around the globe on the course, and we pride ourselves on being a supportive teaching team, whose doors are always open if students have any issues.
