Geography Fieldwork in South Africa 2018: Partnership Working in KwaZulu Natal

"The best part of the trip to South Africa was going on safari. It was the most incredible experience seeing all of the wildlife roaming freely," said final year student Alicia Hopkins.

"Watching the elephants drinking water from a waterhole was the most amazing thing.

There were so many special moments on this trip, including watching the sun set as we had a BBQ on the beach in St Lucia; the boat trip where we got to see the hippos and crocodiles and driving through iSimangaliso Wetland Park for the first time.

But I think the most amazing part was the safari in iMfolozi game reserve and being able to experience four of the big five in such a short space of time.

The most important lesson I learnt whilst in South Africa was that there is so much to explore within the world and I have a burning desire to experience it all!

As well as this, I had the amazing opportunity to work with some incredible organisations and gained a lot of valuable experience and knowledge. (Did you know that hippos can't swim?!)

This once-in-a lifetime opportunity has boosted my confidence enormously. It has helped my understanding around various topics within my Geography degree , allowing me to tie together knowledge gained over the past three years.

I knew before the trip that I wanted to become a teacher, although this experience opened my eyes to the other opportunities that are available out there.

This opportunity has provided me with knowledge and experience that I will keep with me forever and could use well within my teaching career.

I have the most amazing experiences and stories to inspire and encourage children!"
