My placement will give me an advantage after graduating, says Timea

Timea Sediva undertook her second year BA (Hons) Event Management, 10 week internship at Cardiff City Council, working as Event Production Assistant.

"My internship was a fantastic opportunity to put into practice what I’ve learnt on the course. I was extremely fortunate to land a role at Cardiff City Council, as an Event Production Assistant, working on the Volvo Ocean Race which is coming to Cardiff in the Summer of 2018.

The Volvo Ocean Race is a world-class competition, where teams sail around the world; starting in Alicante and finishing at The Hague. Cardiff was chosen as one of the 12 Landmark Host Cities. To mark the occasion, Cardiff City Council have scheduled a festival to celebrate the race with the public, whilst taking the opportunity to promote sustainability, in support of the fight against plastic in the ocean.

My role on the project involved documenting all of the technical measurements, producing paper manuals for contractors and suppliers, and preparing road signage specifications. I created a port operations manual, which included everything from contact numbers, directions to the site, proof of accreditations, layout plans, health and safety information to VISA requirements. It also included information about sustainability concepts.

There was an enormous amount of work to do, which could be challenging at times, given the level of responsibility I had. In the workplace you need to rise to these challenges as your employer is always looking to see that progress is being made. This is to keep the team on track, in achieving the end result - the successful delivery of the event.

During the internship, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside event management professionals on a high profile event. I learnt so much from the people I worked with, including what is considered best practice in the way the event is planned and delivered. Being able to apply the skills I’ve developed on the course to the real world, has now given me something to talk about with prospective employers. I’m confident that the experience I’ve gained will give me a competitive advantage over other graduates and showcase the calibre of work I’m capable of."
