Advanced Clinical Practitioner graduate Jeremy Griffith is the Director of the NHS Wales Delivery Unit.
His previous roles have included Assistant Director of Nursing and Associate Director of Operational Delivery for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
"I qualified in 2000 as a registered nurse in adult care and rotated around a number of specialties in Cardiff. After a time as a ward manager, I started a job as a nurse practitioner in Princess of Wales Hospital. This provided me with a fantastic learning opportunity to undertake the MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner at the University of Glamorgan as it was then.
"The course was three years with a blend of class-based knowledge and practical skills as well as consolidation of those skills in practice. I was supported educationally by the university team as well as a consultant physician mentor.
"I was very proud to complete the course with a distinction and it expanded my horizons in terms of clinical care and how to make a difference.
"In 2008 I commenced a role as an Assistant Director of Nursing, then moved away from a nursing role into general operational management of acute hospitals. The advanced practitioner course I did certainly helped with analysis of data, and a methodological approach in problem solving.
"It also allowed me to engage with clinicians in terms of addressing complex change.
"The qualification has certainly benefited my career. It broadened my horizons and provided me with personal growth in terms of achieving outcomes that I thought were not possible. Once I completed the course I gained promotions every two to three years.
"The three best features of the course were the support, the commitment of teachers in and out of class time, and the perfect balance of theory to practice. Learning was practical as well as thought provoking. The support and challenge was high in equal measure and this pushed me to achieve. And the teaching was really positive - they used previous students and local experts who had empathy. The most enjoyable part was meeting new people from all different clinical backgrounds.
"I would absolutely recommend it to all registered health professionals who want to progress to an advanced practice level."
