Learning through play in an outdoor environment

In the Children Learning Through Landscapes module, offered in year two of the Early Years course, students participate in a range of outdoor activities that they would carry out in practice with children while on their placement.

The module explores learning through play in an outdoor environment and how this supports children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development.

Students learn how to identify and develop opportunities for children’s learning in different outdoor environments, and to understand the environmental impact of using nature’s spaces and resources for outdoor play and sustainability.

"Getting hands on and learning in this way means students can understand the developmental possibilities of these activities and use them to engage children’s learning by using their senses and encouraging creativity," says Pavla Boulton, module leader.
