Meet the lecturer: Dean Parsons, sport scientist and coach

Dean Parsons

Dean Parsons is a Welsh Rugby Union Level 3 Coach, WRU/IRB Coach Educator and leads the rugby courses at USW.

"Rugby coaching is a complex business. Done well, it seems effortless and easy. But you must really want to do it, and work hard at it to get it right and become effective.

I initially graduated as a sports scientist, gained internationally-recognised Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist qualifications and was employed as a strength and conditioning coach at Premiership Clubs such as Neath, Pontypridd and Ebbw Vale. I am now back at Pontypridd RFC and encourage students to get involved as strength and conditioning coaches, analysts and youth rugby coaches.

"Having worked in and around professional rugby clubs for many years, the change to coaching the game and the education of neophyte coaches was seamless, and was initiated by my own journey along a national governing body coach educator pathway.

"I went on to work with senior national rugby squads and was on the coaching team that took Caerphilly Rugby Club to a second-tier European Cup Final versus Castres in 2002 at the Majedski stadium.

"What’s more, I provided international analytical support to the Wales Rugby League squad and part of the Namibia World Cup Squad in a Performance & Predictive Analytics role in the 2015 World Cup. Applying all these skills under pressure in an international environment stands me in good stead when developing USW’s rugby coaching courses and students.

"The great Chinese philosopher Confucius once said: "Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life."

"Being able to work at, and refine something that is your greatest passion is worth everything – I’m incredibly fortunate and it could be you!"
