Advertising course launches Academy with leading Cardiff agency

Rebel Lion Advertising partnership

The University of South Wales (USW) has partnered with Cardiff advertising agency Rebel Lion to help Advertising students take their first steps into the industry.

The Resistance Academy, which will see its first recruits in January 2024, is an internship programme for students on USW’s BA (Hons) Advertising course to benefit from expert knowledge and work with clients on real-life advertising campaigns.

A team from Rebel Lion – CEO Matt Jones, Creative Director Jamie Hibbard and Content Producer Dan Jones recently ran a workshop with some of the students, and challenged them to come up with a strapline for the academy, where the winner was ‘Earn your Mane’ – a collaborative effort by first year student Max Kingston and third year student Eugene Teo.

Lee Thomas, course leader for Advertising at USW, said: “We are very excited to partner with Rebel Lion for the Resistance Academy. As a course we have worked with Matt and the team for several years, and he has always been extremely supportive of our students, providing live projects and internships which has led to him employing seven of our graduates within the industry.”

Matt Jones, CEO of Rebel Lion, added: “In the heart of ad-land, creativity knows no bounds, and the Resistance Academy is not your average ad school; it’s the gateway to real-world experiences in advertising. We can’t wait to welcome our first wave of ad rebels to earn their mane!”

The Academy’s curriculum focuses on interpersonal communication, problem solving, critical thinking, adaptability, project management and leadership skills, intended to encourage students to tackle real-world advertising challenges.

The Resistance Academy will see five annual intakes of eight budding advertising professionals taking part in a week-long live brief, with a chance to pitch their ideas to the Rebel Lion team at the end.
